Canine Semen Bank

With the help of a semen bank, sperm from male dogs can be collected and frozen for future use. Liquid nitrogen preservation (cryo-storage) enables the long-term storage of frozen sperm, with the semen being stored in -196° celsius. Frozen semen is widely utilized for canine breeding purposes and helps maintain genetic diversity within breeds. Sperm can also be sent abroad, allowing for mating without the need for travel.

Import and export

Increasingly, breeders choose to utilize frozen semen. We provide semen import and export services, allowing transfer of semen into Finland and from Finland to all parts of the world. We only use qualified couriers for transportation, ensuring that the semen remains in proper condition, even for long journeys up to 3 weeks. Import duties, VAT, and customs processing fees are the responsibility of the customer, but we help in making sure that all the paperwork is in order. We work with many clinics and veterinarians across the world.

If sperm is sent abroad, we provide a certificate verifying sperm quality and volume. A single dose of sperm contains at least 200 million sperm, of which a minimum of 100-150 million are motile. The certificate assures the recipient of the sperm's quality, making it essential for both the buyer and the inseminating veterinarian.

Semen collection, freezing and storage

Once collected, the sperm is frozen in small straws, allowing for single uses or multiple inseminations. A small quantity is packaged into individual doses, which can later be “controlled thawed” for verification of viability. Freezing is always performed at the clinic under the supervision of an experienced veterinarian to ensure the highest quality. If a sample does not meet the necessary standards, it is discarded immediately. After freezing, a qualified veterinarian inspects the sample to ensure it meets high standards.

We freeze semen in 0.5ml straws which are sealed using an ultrasound sealer. All straws are labeled with male identification, date of collection and freezing facility.

At the client’s request, the sperm’s morphology, motility, and overall quality are assessed. These assessments help detect possible abnormalities or low sperm counts. In addition to traditional microscopic examination, motility and structure can also be evaluated with modern imaging technology, providing a comprehensive quality analysis.

Artificial insemination with frozen semen

When performing artificial inseminations, we strive to maximize conception success by determining the optimal timing. Timing is always based on the female’s progesterone level, vaginal cell condition, and observations of discharge and behavior. Before any insemination, the semen is thawed and assessed for suitability. If the quality is found lacking, insemination can be postponed or canceled, thereby saving costs and avoiding unnecessary procedures. Thawed sperm remains usable for about 24 hours, after which it must be discarded. Frozen sperm may also be unsuitable for some breeds or dogs with abnormal genital structure.
